Super Mario Bros. 4 - Box Art by thehookshot Super Mario Bros. 4 - Box Art by thehookshot
What if the Super Nintendo waited a couple more years to be released? What if Nintendo (not having Super Mario World at the time) was in need of another 8-bit Mario adventure? What if they decided to call that game: “Super Mario Bros. 4?”

I took the simple and classic Mario 3 box art and updated it with a new color scheme. It stands out nicely and the “jumping Mario” on the box looks a lot like how he was drawn in his early years.

Take a look at the entire Super Mario 4 feature over at: The Hookshot!

Technically Super Mario Brothers 4 exists... In Japan. Y'see, in the Land of the Rising Sun, Super Mario World had a subtitle. The subtitle was Super Mario Bros. 4.

Nice work, I almost wish that game existed. ;)

Y'know, on the Japanese boxart for "Super Mario World," it calls the game "Super Mario World," with a small subtitle reading, "Super Mario Bros. 4," so I guess SMW is officially SMB4.

Good point - Just like Yoshi's Island is "Super Mario World 2"... Nintendo had to cover their corners.

Yeah, I wonder if that makes that game "Super Mario Bros. 5."
Though, it's more like a solo Yoshi-game sense you don't really control Mario in it, and the gameplay was a bit different. (Though, some things introduced in it like the "ground pound" move were put into the Mario games.)
I hear in Japan Yoshi's Island doesn't have that "SMW2" subtitle.
And then there was the GBA rerelease "Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island," wich made the title even more confusing.

Nintendo likes adding subtitles to their game titles to much. lol

That could be why Yoshi's Island was not really known as Super Mario Bros. 5, because that would be rather Yoshi game though. But it is.
